Just a few more changes on the way to 3.0. Some localizations are back thanks to volunteers. The auto-hide options from previous versions have also returned. Barring any serious issues, a "real" 3.0 release should be ready soon!

Changes from Chax 3.0 Beta 1:

  • (New) Added options to auto-hide the contact list and chat windows when inactive
  • (New) Added a new Growl notification for status message changes
  • (New) French localization (thanks to Yann Ricquebourg)
  • (New) German localization (thanks to Christoph Schmitz)
  • (New) Russian localization (thanks to Denis Avdeev)
  • (Bug) Plain text ICQ now works properly on 32-bit machines
  • (Bug) Fixed the add contact menu not always working in the unified contact list

Thanks so much for bringing auto-hide back! I'll consider a second donation for your hard work. Many many thanks for this great piece of software. Martin

Thanks, Kent. Update & relaunch from v3.0b1 using iChat Preferences->Chax->About worked smoothly and, as you promised, the “+” button in the All Contacts window now does work again for adding a buddy. Bottom Line for me: Chax v3.0b2 working great in all regards that I use—and I’d not want to use iChat without the additional features that your Chax provides. Please keep up the great work. (Additional donation has been made in appreciation for your work.)

Looks and works perfect, except for the fact that theres a memory leak problem. I'm around 350MB of memory being used by iChat every time I load it. Thanks for the quick updates for this program regardless.

Заметил, что при использовании произвольного статуса, существуют проблемы соединения протокола ICQ

Red_Bandit at 2010-01-24 06:00:16 -0500

I noticed that when using the arbitrary status, there are problems connecting ICQ protocol

I noticed that when using the "ICQ Plain text" ( mac os x 10.6.2 RUS ) , Google Talk is not working... freezes ...does not allow to click on the button box. thanks!

Seems to be running quite nice, thank you very much for your hard work! Any plans on adding a merge contacts in the unified list feature?

Hey man question for you. The new Chax for Snow Leopard Beta 3 or whatever the latest beta is doesn't have the growl option where it pops up and shows u when users become available or go offline. I really really liked that option back in Leopard! Please Re-add it!!!

F. at 2010-01-25 06:48:44 -0500

@S. Look in the Growl-Prefpane. The Option is there. Address book or Mail sometimes crashes when I launch iChat with Chax. I also sometimes have an error when I try to connect to ICQ. Trying 2-3 times "solves" this. Is there any chance for Jabber Priorities? Thanks for the great work!!!!!!!

Andrew at 2010-01-25 08:21:43 -0500

I wonder if this is a bug, but I've noticed it with the last series of updates. Normally, when someone IMs me and a growl notification comes up, I can click the growl notification, and it will give focus to the chat window with this person. I'm not sure when this behavior changed. Now, when you click on such notifications, it just gives the iChat application focus, but does not give focus to the chat window of the person that just IM'ed me.

Mike at 2010-01-25 12:49:43 -0500

Special thanks for the great work! iChat is useable again! :)

Waldo at 2010-01-25 14:49:25 -0500

Awesome! Bug report though: If you try to remove a Jabber buddy from the main (apple-1) menu by highlighting and choosing Buddies>Remove Buddy... you get an angry beep and that's it. To remove the buddy successfully, you need to open the jabber buddy list specifically and remove from there. W

If I try to delete a contact in the unified list, it doesn't delete them.

Michael Croft at 2010-01-25 21:37:48 -0500

Pfft. And I duplicate the bug report immediately above mine. Same as Waldo's, but with AIM...

Ovis at 2010-01-26 09:16:09 -0500

As long as I remember, it was never possible to delete contacts from the unified list. Kent, would it be possible to make chax assign a different avatar for each account in iChat? I mean the usual "hard-working-guy" avatar for a work account and "steroid-pumped dude" avatar for anything else…

Darren at 2010-01-26 10:47:52 -0500

The auto accept file transfer is not working properly. I use this feature the most as I have two computers in my office and send files back and forth.

asdalolla at 2010-01-26 15:13:20 -0500

Hi @ all! i've a problem with the webcam in ichat after the update. only voice conversation, app says "isight not supported in this computer". no problem with photo-booth or gmail video conference (web app). i'm using ichat with a gmail account. anyone else? p.s.: sorry for bad english ;D

Joe Workman at 2010-01-26 17:16:21 -0500

For some reason ever since Chax 3.0 moved from being a launcher, it never stays as a plugin. After I run an install, everything works fine. But as soon as quit iChat and reopen, Chax is gone. I have no clue what is causing this but its driving me nuts. Cheers, Joe

Jeremy at 2010-01-26 21:14:58 -0500

Bug Report! I have mobileMe and my ichat encryption certificate was revoked when updating to 3.0b2. I never got an error in b1, but then again I never checked to see if it was on! Everything else seems fine!

S. at 2010-01-27 00:35:15 -0500

@F. I checked the growl pref pane and all the options are enabled for users becoming available and going idle, but it's not working! Is it working you u or anyone else in that matter? ----- Hey man question for you. The new Chax for Snow Leopard Beta 3 or whatever the latest beta is doesn’t have the growl option where it pops up and shows u when users become available or go offline. I try to use "Send in plain text" but it does not work. I try to reinstall and delete several time. I have 10.6.2 - 32 bit core

Kevin at 2010-01-27 09:11:31 -0500

Hi there, works about alright now on my 10.6.2 german ... the unified contact list isn't showing anything though. icq plain text is working flawlessly.

Tim at 2010-01-27 20:48:33 -0500

Bug Report - I haven't tracked down exactly what seems to be triggering the problem, but the autohide functionality isn't working consistently for me. After periods of usage, the autohide quits functioning. I can go back into prefs uncheck it and close, then go back in and re-check and it works again. Next time it occurs I'm going to try quitting iChat and restarting to see if it's active with a restart. If nobody else reports back on it I'll update you with the results.

asdalolla at 2010-01-28 17:23:20 -0500

@tim same problem for autohide!

Tim at 2010-01-28 21:35:49 -0500

The autohide problem just occurred when iChat started for the first time today (I have it set to start automatically at login). Closing a chat window didn't fix the problem but after closing and restarting iChat, the autohide functioned normally.

Chax 3.0b2 seems to have a continuing issue of disappearing from my Preferences panel. I have to get the installer to Remove and then Install Chax again for it to appear. Then after a couple of days, it will be gone again. OS X 10.6.2 iChat 5.0.1 /

cd at 2010-02-03 21:42:32 -0500

Hi. I'm new to your amazing product, so not sure if you are already aware. I noticed that I can't really manage groups in your "All Contacts" view. I can't drag people between groups or rename them. I can only do this by opening iChat's native "Aim Buddy List" and "Jabber List" seperately and managing them there, then they are reflected in the All Contacts view. Thanks! cd

will at 2010-02-04 14:48:39 -0500

so far, looking good. are there plans to combine buddies, as in adium? also, noticed a bug: when deleting a group from the combined buddy list, confirm drop down stays open when you confirm delete or hit cancel. upon reload of ichat, the group is deleted.

Simon at 2010-02-05 09:09:07 -0500

Excellent - found a small bug. Just found one small issue with 3.0 beta 2. On starting one of my connection accounts was causing a "Cannot verify certificate" and Chax was displaying a "Check for updates" dialog. No nuttons on either dialog would work so we were locked-up (needing a force quit). Chax dialog had foreground but nothing would clear it. Force quit and re-ran iChat several time always with same result. In the end had to remove Chax, run iChat, tell the account certificate warning to always trust that account then exit iChat, re-install Chax and restart and it all went fine then (Chax "Check for updates" would work fineas there was no longer any "Cannot verify security certificate" warning dialog on the account causing the report.
