Chax 1.4.9
The beta for Chax 1.4.9 seemed solid, so I'm republishing it as a final version along with a couple updated localizations.
Changes from 1.4.8:
- (New) Added options for command-up/down arrows to change tabs for vertically oriented tabs
- (Bug) Fixed an incompatibility with Safari 3 Beta
- (Bug) Updated localizations to include new items in the activity window toolbar
- (Bug) Chat logs saved in subfolders of the iChats log folder now appear properly
- (Bug) "Send SMS Message" menu item now respects the the show Chax badge preference
- (Bug) Fixed an issue with new direct IM conversations being immediately selected

would love to use the side tabs, but i want the names to be displayed vertically instead of their current horizontal feature. that might be hard to do..... but im not a programmer so its easy for me to make the request... :) meaning that the name "Meatleg" would be displayed with the M towards the bottom of the screen and the G would be at the top of the screen if the tab was on the left. and it would be displayed the the M towards the top of the screen and the G would be at the bottom of the screen if the tab was on the right... mostly i want this to save screen space... anyway, i still love CHAX!!!! thanks. later

Hi! Thanks for Chax, it's great. However, 1.4.9 seems to have killed my video conference stuff; It was working fine yesterday, then I upgraded to 1.4.9 from the prior version, and now I can't call out or in. I removed Chax, then it worked just fine. It's intermittent though - it works with some people, not with others. However, with Chax uninstalled, it works all the time. Thanks!

Friend turned me on to Chax - love the tabs. Not so concerned about orientation, but would like to see a way to make the font a bit bigger. When using my Macbook on the desktop, it's sometimes a bit hard to work with the small-ish tabs. Thanks for making iCHat usable :-)

here's a request that would drive me crazy (in a good way): Let the user (that's me!) select how the columns are arranged. Would that be possible? I myself would love to put the status icon RIGHT NEXT to the user icon, so that they're right next to each other and I can see both who's online & who's actually available much easier. This might seem like a dumb request, but I keep ichat to the right side of the screen, so even if I have a lot going on on the screen window-wise, I have it arranged so I can still see the right-most edge of the ichat window (buddy icons). If the status indicator was next to that, then I'd be able to quickly tell if a buddy is online without clicking on ichat to bring it forward. Would save me 2 seconds. But a worthwhile 2 seconds! :-P

works amazing on my PPC but on my intel i get messages that i cannot open. no matter how many times i click accept the will not. so i then have to close the message window and ask them to resend.

Thanks for all your great work.

There is a bug when you try to enlarge the pref pane by cliking in the right bottom corner. (French version) However this is a very good add-on ! Thanks very much !

is there an easier way to contact you kent? i'd like to ask you a question about this, but the contact field is down, if you could reply to the email I am submitting that would be great, thanks.

Great program. I was wondering if it is at all possible to remove the feature that tells the person you are chatting with that you are typing a response. Can this be hidden/disabled?
Tj at 2007-07-10 16:50:18 -0400
Noticed a annoyance, possibly a bug. You can view here. http://tjshafer.com/Picture%201.png Has to do with the area where you type text and the area where you view the confo.

Great program, love the activity log but Chax doesn't work with Leopard beta. Chax 1.5 in Alpha?
violet at 2007-07-11 00:18:54 -0400
the same thing happened to me that has happened to Tj as well. my text box will either do that, or the space below it will grow intermittently bigger each time i type into it. what's going on–it's very irritating.
violet at 2007-07-11 01:57:35 -0400
finally had to go back to previous version. this latest was funkifying my ichat too much.

i love chax. for serious. it rocks. thank you for it. is it possible to merge buddy lists into a single one? I use jabber and aim, if I could merge to a single that'd rock. thanks regardless

I can't seem to get group chats to work, on the new version, or the previous one. Am I missing something? Awesome app, but need group chats back.
Boardndave at 2007-07-12 17:30:11 -0400
I don't know if this is a feature or not (I can't seem to find it), but I would love to have the ability to override address book pictures in iChat and just view regular icons chosen by users. Hopefully that's not too confusing. :O.
aaron at 2007-07-12 18:54:23 -0400
i love using chax, the horizontal tabs rule. so easy and clean. fyi i upgraded from 1.4.8. to 1.4.9 and since my group chats no longer have a field for me to enter chat text, i can still enter chat but my chat that i type floats in the group chat (see screenshot) and i cannot see the last line of anyones chat (screenshot can be seen at below url) http://www.gettingmegga.com/picture_32.png
aaron at 2007-07-12 20:48:06 -0400
ok, so my above post only happened after i used option & return (mac) during a chat
LarryL at 2007-07-13 12:06:46 -0400
I would like to see an option where I can choose (preferably on the Buddy List) whether I want a person to see me online or not before I log on. Sometimes I don't want everyone to know I am online and just want to talk with one or two people. I use ichat mostly for work.
clint at 2007-07-13 17:15:06 -0400
just a heads up i've always seemed to notice when someone ims me, and their window pops up, it wants to show some sort of tabbed state, even when i have the always on button unticked. no problem really, just a visual bug.
windycitysal at 2007-07-13 19:07:02 -0400
hi! i also love chax - thanks for all the great features. not sure if its related or not but... since upgrading to newest version, file transfers that i receive are cut off midway with a file transfer error. not always but more often than not. my computer is not set to sleep and it happens regardless of online status. hope to hear from you. thanks again!
Adam at 2007-07-14 17:29:20 -0400
This program is great. For future versions, I'd love to see chat history come up in the main chat window when someone sends you a new IM, kinda like what Adium does.
ckm at 2007-07-15 22:19:34 -0400
good job i've been keeping up with the progress chax has made since 1.4.6. just one question though. you know when you do the apple-tab key combo and see the name of the person who sent you a new IM? is it possible to show a notification on the ichatagent? (the ichat icon in the menu bar with the account name and time). that would actually be a big help for me since i have my dock hidden and i always have my camino or safari in front of ichat. keep up the good work nonetheless :)
Cooner at 2007-07-16 12:24:47 -0400
I'll third what TJ and Violet said ... I think mostly when I type something into the input field that takes more than one line, it seems to 'bump up' the input field so it crashes into the output window. I JUST upgraded to the new Chax version and JUST turned on the side tabs, so I'm making an assumption the problem may lie somewhere in there ...
Whisper at 2007-07-16 14:09:08 -0400
I reinstalled iChat because Jabber wasn't giving me the bubble that indicates the other person is typing and now I can't reinstall Chax. It says it installs but it doesn't work. Any ideas?
Matt at 2007-07-16 16:12:53 -0400
When you paste a paragraph of text that takes up a few lines and then send it to your recipient, the chat window gets bumped down and either almost covers up the input field or covers it up entirely. This is definitely a Chax thing...
exodusd at 2007-07-17 06:17:23 -0400
I think the chat history should be sorted by date/time, not alphabetically. In the list with stored chat histories, the month comes first (verbose), then the day of the month, then the year, and then the time (am/pm). I think it would be useful to either chose a different format for the list (optionally, e.g. 2007-06-25 18:45, this way, the messages will be sorted chronologically), or to keep the display format but to sort them by timestamp internally. That would make it easier to browse through the last few chat sessions you had with a person.
Allen Hancock at 2007-07-17 11:35:15 -0400
So, now we can have our chats stored in folders in ~/Documents/iChats cool Is there a cool tool to put the chats in folders?

Anyone having issue with video after installing. My new MBP 17 no longer can hold a video conference. My video icon does not show up for any of my buddies. No 2 way conf for me...yes camera is working I can see it in prefs. Any thoughts or work arounds, love chax but if this is the issue it has to go. Thanks guys.

I am also having the same problem as TJ with the expanding IM box. I can't figure out what seems to be causing it, though.
Smivey at 2007-07-22 19:40:04 -0400
Love Chax and the tabs feature. Unfortunately, the tabs seem to disappear after a while when I have them on the right or left. Hopefully, this is an easy fix. Thanks for creating a great product.
Lexa at 2007-07-23 17:37:20 -0400
I really like Chax, it makes iChat much more bearable. However... You know how, in AIM, you can make away messages with more than one line break? Is there any way to do that in iChat, using Chax? Also, when I view people's profiles that have a color background, it doesn't show up (on Chax/iChat).. could this be fixed so that their backgrounds show up? Other than that, Chax is great! :)
Sarah at 2007-07-24 09:19:36 -0400
I also have the problem where I cannot accept a chat. I had updated to 10.4.9 and didn't see the problem until recently. I can't pin point if it is in combination with an Apple patch (they tend to screw more things up than not). This is a wonderful product! THANKS!
Allen Hancock at 2007-07-24 09:55:50 -0400
yeah, going back to 1.4.8. I am w/ TJ & Aaron, and have too many cosmetic glitches all caused by my typing making the new text box to big for the screen...
Tom at 2007-07-24 10:06:22 -0400
Thanks for Chax. We've started using Jabber groups instead of IRC. It would be great to be able to distinguish notifications/alerts for Jabber group messages from person-to-person Jabber messages.
Soenke at 2007-07-24 10:43:33 -0400
Thanx for your great application. I have a short question, I don't know if is related to chax or to iChat: Since a while now the status messages of my buddies don't change anymore. I can see changing them from red to green an vice versa but the message "Der Benutzer ist zurzeit nicht verfügbar.[Currently N/A]" doesn't change. I deleted my account in iChat recently since I thought it was screwed up. I also reinstalled chax. Do you have any ideas what could be wrong?
Steve Riggins at 2007-07-24 19:22:57 -0400
I am seeing the same chat log area extending over the text input area bug
Rignus at 2007-07-24 21:59:06 -0400
Gracias! I like previous TIMESTAMP idea plus... when auto-logback in to AIM (after connection cut, per se), could it display the same away message that it had up before the break? That would be BUENO!!
nathan at 2007-07-25 04:03:12 -0400
Chax is a fantastic addition to iChat. It's ridiculous that Apple has so few options for customization. There's one thing that's sort of annoying me though. I can't really have a custom application icon for iChat with Chax installed. If I give iChat a new icon and restart the dock, the dock will change to the new icon, but if you click on iChat, it'll automatically change back to the official icon. Don't know what's going on here, but hopefully you do ;-)
Tom at 2007-07-25 15:57:41 -0400
It seems Chax might have killed my video too. After installing the update I just get a black screen in iChat's video and if I try Skype instead the video is extremely bright and noisy.

with 149 i started having a problem on two macs - one intel g5 imac and one not g5 aibook - when a second IM comes in (when i already have one going in a chat window) I can not respond nor accept it. Clicking accept (or typing and clicking accept/send) does nothing. I have to close the incoming window and initiate a chat with the person in order to get it into my tabbed window. Just started with 149.

Chax seems to give me problems at times when resizing the tabbed window size. The entire window goes white without any features, and I must force quit the application and relaunch.
PorradaVFR at 2007-07-26 17:29:18 -0400
I keep experiencing a bug in which the buddy list window does not size correctly after waking the system from sleep. The top border takes up about half of the screen height - only corrected by quitting / restarting iChat. Has anyone else run across this issue? (fixes?)

im having this weird problem when i type more than a line of text into the text box. it makes the window a weird size and puts the text box under the already typed text. kinda anoying, altho, im hooked on Chax art this point anyhow and cant do without it. somebody let me know if there is a way to fix that. here is an image... http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k247/toddbratrud/Picture1-2.png

Hi there, Downloaded 1.4.9, but it will not install. Asks for my admin password, key in, then keeps asking for password continually. Tried an (incorrect) password - just to be sure that my password was correct and it is. Run iChat and Chax is still at v1.4.8 - has not been updated. :-(

I know it's possible to change the auto-away but is there anyway to disable Idle so it will either show Available then Away after the number of minutes I specify next to Auto-away delay? Or can I change the number of minutes before Idle shows up? If not, can you please add this functionality in the future?

Is is possible that the latest Safari 3.0.3 (and new webkit) created a Chax conflict. After the update, I've had a lot of chats with co-workers who use iChat (not Chax) and on several occasions today my co-workers could not type text in response to my iChats. My co-worker are using Safari 2 with iChat. I'm using Safari 3.0.3 with Chax. I don't know if this is a Chax problem or an iChat issue. I uninstalled Chax this afternoon, and I will test iChat with my sco-workers tomorrow.

Hi- I was wondering if there is any way to get a fully formatted conversation from ichat/chax out to the web while retaining its formatting? Mike Great product btw!

I've got 1.4.9b installed with the latest version of Safari 3 beta installed. When I try to initiate a chat with more than one other party (multi-party chat), the other parties gets a "Join Failed; An error occurred while attempting to join the chat" error when they try to respond to my IM. Unfortunately, the problem is not consistently reproducible.

Thanks a lot for Chax, it's everything iChat was missing. Unfortunately with 1.4.9, I noticed an option has gone missing. The option to bring up the Buddy List when clicking on the Dock icon is missing, and I would like to turn it off...but how?!
LJB at 2007-08-05 21:08:43 -0400
Having a strange issue with ichat on one of our machines. (have uninstalled and tried a brand new user account). I'm guessing its not chax's fault but maybe you've seen this. Open ichat, it auto-logs on (sound and friends can see me online). Except buddy list does not open up and Name/status just says "Welcome to iChat!". Thats it. Any ideas?
Lint at 2007-08-07 22:28:30 -0400
There seems to be a new bug in 1.4.9. I have a continually growing 'grey' (brushed metal like the rest of the window) space between my status menu below my nick and the buddy window. It seems to grow as a function of how many times i reconnect without restarting the app (usually by waking from sleep on the ibook). quitting are relaunching clears up the empty space, unttil it starts growing again
Anna-Laura at 2007-08-09 10:16:57 -0400
i don't know whether others are experiencing this, and it may not be chax, but my ichat occasionally just goes all white and i can't get anything up. so i quit, and restart and everything's normal. have you seen that?
Anna-Laura at 2007-08-10 12:04:03 -0400
ok, so i turned off animated icons, and it hasn't happened since. i read the other comments and noone seems to have this problem. anyway, it seems to be a chax bug:)

So while using i-chax today to talk to my friend, whom is african american, i suddenly was unable to speak with him. I closed the window and double clikced his name and I was unable to open a new window with him and I wasn't able to speak with him at all. I'm not sure how you made your program rascist but I was wondering if you could fix it so I could talk to my friend. (just so no one gets all offended this is kind of a joke, although the problem really did happen I don't really think chax is rascist (or do I?))
Tres at 2007-08-11 13:13:11 -0400
Wanted to say great job and request a possible feature. It would be nice to be able to dock/auto-hide the contact window (and IM window too!). I'm a longtime Adium user and am slowly switching to iChat thanks to Chax but I do miss my auto-hide. As far as the IM auto-hide, I have not seen this with any IM client but would like for it to be added (to reduce desktop clutter). Thanks again for the great work.
