A very minor release for some more bugs in tabs, including one problem introduced in Chax 1.4.1 that would cause new messages in tabs to not come to the front properly.

Changes from 1.4.1:

  • (Feature improvement) Activity window now has a toolbar with options to clear the log and search through activity
  • (Feature improvement) Activity window now saves status messages and logs incoming and outgoing file transfers
  • (Bugfix) Clicking the close button on the tab window will now properly close all tabs
  • (Bugfix) The contact list will stay at the top of the screen when auto-resizing is enabled and the contact list spans the entire height of the screen
  • (Bugfix) Fixed problems with tabs not coming to the front properly when auto-accept text invitations option was disabled
  • (Bugfix) Fixed problems with group chats not appearing properly
  • (Bugfix) Inviting more people to a group chat now displays the invitation sheet properly
  • (Bugfix) Selecting "Invite to Chat..." from the Buddies menu works properly again
  • (Bugfix) Fixed a problem where the text window would try to resize infinitely when using tabs

feature request: ability to set idle time

Chax is a great enhancement to iChat for Mac users. I had a persistent problem with iChat ever since upgrading to Tiger, whereby iChat would go offline and not reconnect. Installing Chax solved this problem with the reconnect feature. Highly recommended! Great software!

Absolutely wonderful release! I've been a user of this add-on for about a week now I'd say, and it's made iChat tolerable. I've been using Adium for awhile but have always preferred the integration with Mac OS X that iChat has. This sucker is gettling close to a best-of-both-worlds scenario. A feature that I really enjoyed from Adium that you may consider for the next release: Adium shows the previous chat history in the chat window when you open it up. This is very handy if you want to pick up where you left off or forgot what you said to who. Sometimes when I'm talking to two or three people I forget what I'm talking about when I close my windows (which I do all the time because I'm a neat freak with my cluttered desktop). Chax is a blast, keep up the good work!

Another Adium X switcher here :) I really appreciate all the efforts the developer has put into Chax and would like to give my deepest thanks for making iChat once again usable. As the above poster, Richard, commented, the ability of having a scroll back chat history from the last chat when a new window opens would be really awesome, I too chat to many people and often forget where I need to pick up from. Also, I know that this question has been asked many a time, but is it possible to consolidate the AIM and Jabber buddy lists? This would, for me, really be the icing on the cake.

This is a great piece of work - tabbed chatting is a huge step forward! One thing I noticed that differs from earlier releases of 1.4 is that selecting someone from the buddy list doesn't automatically open a new tab AND bring it to the front. The result is that I often type a greeting - intended for someone new - in an existing chat, confusing both of us, and making me look kinda foolish. Is there a pref for this somewhere that I'm missing? Although I'm not sure why you'd want this behaviour in the first place, I'm gonna assume it may have something to do with the recent fixes around automatically bringing new incoming chat requests to the front and submit a bug report. Has anyone else been able to replicate this behaviour? Otherwise, rock on! Great stuff!

I have a feature requestion: an option to disable the pop-up dialog that says that "Couldn't connect to server" such as when your jabber server goes down. Yes, you have the option to reconnect, but when you get this dialog box, further reconnect efforts are stopped. An option to try and reconnect every 5, 10 min. etc. would be helpful here. Say you went to work at 8; the jabber server went down for maintenance for 10 min. at 8:30; iChat tried reconnecting once during those 10 min. but couldn't. The jabber server is back up but iChat is not reconnected. You come home at 6 and your iChat has basically been down all day even though the actual server was down only for a short time. Disabling the dialog and attempting to reconnect every so many minutes would solve this problem, in my analysis. :)

Also, I think consolidating Jabber and AIM buddy lists may be a good idea but I don't know how doable.

Great bit of software - many many thanks. Donation on the way. Do you know (because no-one else seems to!) if there is anyway to prevent iTunes from pausing music playback whenever an AV chat begins? I use an iMac running iSight/iChat (added AutoAcceptAVInvitations to the plist) to keep an eye on my bar while I'm out of town; but I also use iCal / iTunes plumbed into the house PA system for all the weekly background music. Music stops when I just want to virtually pop in and see how things are going. Not ideal :) Thanks again.

one problem: when double-clicking old saved chats (.ichat format) iChat comes to front, but nothing happens. also, the chax log viewer hardly works. tiger server 10.4.6 other than that, GREAT piece of software, beed looking for something like this for a LOOOONG time. thanks, keep up the amazing work!

I really like this software! I used it a couple of months ago, but then had to stop because people were not receiving my end of the conversation and images would not come through. Did the update address this? Has anyone else experienced these issues? Thanks! :)

Also kudos from me! Great job! Keep up the good work! :o) I noticed a little bug: when iChat is not open, iChax' text chat auto accept option is on, and a buddie contacts for a chat session, the tabbed chat window will mostly come up with a black background. By changing the chat window background the problem vanishes, but just next chat session (with iChat restarted) will display the glitch again. I am using the german localized version of iChax on 10.4.6 combined with Iridium (), a GUI mod for Mac OS X. Best regards from Cologne, Germany Ralph

I concur with eliot (above) The fact that my ichat.log files will mostly not load in ichat anymore (some will load as usual sporadically) is huge drag. It's a great software otherwise. I'd say focus on fixing this bug and forget the Log Viewer… or beef it the hell up, becuase the finder+spotlight combo is so much more useful than this strange little appliance.
