Chax 2.2 Beta 1

This has been a while in coming, but it should finally be usable enough for public testing:

Enable message history by enabling the option “Show previous message history in new message windows” in Chax’s general preferences. You may notice that message history will not immediately appear after enabling this option. Message history will only be displayed after you begin to chat with other people after you enable this option, so chat with some people for a bit before determining that it isn’t working.

There are also a couple of new options that aren’t currently exposed in the preferences. At some point in the future I’ll add a page describing all of the hidden defaults that Chax currently includes. SaveWindowFrames is an option ported from Chax 1.5 that saves the window position for each contact that you talk to. ShowSenderAccount shows what account you’re using to talk to someone with for those of you who use multiple accounts on the same service and want to know which account you’re sending a message from.

The syntax for enabling hidden options in the Terminal is as follows:

defaults write com.ksuther.chax SaveWindowFrames -bool YES

Changes from Chax 2.1.2:

  • (New) Message history shows messages from the previous conversation in new chat windows
  • (New) Added multitouch swipe gesture to switch tabs in message window
  • (New) Hidden default SaveWindowFrames saves per-contact window positions
  • (New) Hidden default ShowSenderAccount shows the active account in each conversation
  • (Bug) Fixed parsing logs with some languages
  • (Bug) New chat windows no longer steal focus when using auto-accept

    Nice update, it’s great to have the message history built in. I could not, however, get the SaveWindowFrames option working; I tried multiple times doing different things but it wouldn’t work.

    Also, as I’m now using multiple accounts, I noticed that the All Contacts list does not allow the groups in the list to be rearranged (outside of alphabetical arrangement). Any chance that rearrangement of these groups can be added in a future chax update? On the same note, is it possible to show the group totals, even when expanded? (i.e. “4 of 10″, meaning 4 online contacts of 10 total). Also, as a bugfix, the checkmark when “Show by Handle” is selected does not show up, though the feature works.

    Hello,
    Message history works on my Leopard with english language on the first in system preferences, when i have polish one this function stop working. If You publish sources i can check, degug and fix.

    It’s great seeing message history. I have only played around with it for a little bit, but so far it seems to work just fine (using English). Perhaps the bar separating chats could be wider to make it more visible, but otherwise it’s a very nice addition.

    Hey Kent,

    Just noticing some weird bug happening where I’m logged in and the normal buddy lists show my contacts, but the combined contact list shows that I’m offline. If i change the status in the contact list to an “Away” status it shows the status, but the list shows nothing still. I can change to offline and back to an Away status with the same result. If I change it to an available status then it shows my contacts and everything goes back to normal. Away status’s work and offline works.

    It seems to happen if i’ve left my machine for a while. maybe sleep related. I’ll try keep an eye on it and narrow down the possibilities.

    Hi! I love this little plugin. But it always crashes iChat when I close a chat window. I don’t know if it’s a general Chax bug but looks like it is.

    I played with iChat and Chax a little longer. I must say it’s really nice. But one thing is kind of annoying (from the iChat side): I’m using the unified contact list, which is really great. And I have setup an AIM, an ICQ, a Google Talk and an MSN (vie Jabber) account. Now the list is combined and the AIM and ICQ accounts from one contact are combined to one meta contact. But the Jabber accounts don’t make it in to that meta contact. So for some people I see their names twice in the list.
    It would be great, if Chax could handle that and not just combine the lists but the accounts of a contact, too. Then it would be the perfect plugin to go back to iChat and say Adium bye bye.

    With Chax I only use the Contacts list. When I start up with iChat I have my .Mac set to auto-login but not my Jabber account. Is there a way Chax could make a menu item to set account status for the different accounts individually?

    Could you add the feature, that if somebody ist not available , i can see although his away message? if somebody ist not available or busy i cant see his away message. its because some friends writes why they are busy. and i cant see it.

    Hey. I recently switched from adium to ichat and to chax as well. You can’t get around it. its great.
    But I’ve got one annoying problem with using the unified contact list. Ive got 2 accounts ready. ICQ (AIM) & .Mac. The unified contact list only shows my .mac contacts online. The ICQ Contacts remain offline. If i switch to the ICQ contact list, they are shown online there. If i start an “offline chat” with them through the unified contyct list and they answer, they instantly become online in the unified contact list.
    Ever heard of that problem?

    This feature is already there in iChat. You just have to set your status to “Current iTunes Song”. No need for Chax here.

    I really love this plugin, it’s one of those things I just can’t live without on my mac!

    Is there a keyboard shortcut for switching between chat tabs? It seems like the adium-like Cmd+Shift+ArrowKey worked in the Tiger version of chax, but not anymore. I miss that so! Thanks!

    Hi, I have a new idea for new future. Can you please add search box for contact to contact list windows under “status message”? Windows Live Messenger have a search box for contact, is a more easy and cool speed for searching contact.

    I’ve seen lots of articles that say Chax auto-reconnects ichat. I can’t find the feature anywhere within the interface. If it has been dropped could you make a formal announcement as hundreds of blogs state that chax has this feature and it is quite misleading.

    I know it’s not your problem that iChat has a lack of auto-reconnect. But you had it working great in 10.4. It’s gone in your 10.5 Chax. It would be totally cool of you to let us know whether or not this is on your roadmap to re-implement. Getting bumped off of our jabber server, with no auto-reconnect, is the single biggest headache we have with respect to iChat and we would be singing your praises if you did bring this functionality back!!!

    I’d like to see Nested Groups or Smart Groups. Nested groups would be my highest request priority though. I’d also like to see the ability to Block by Group rather than by individual.

    I just want to say thank you for this awesome piece of software. My mom is 83 and would never touch a computer. I am setting up a mac mini video chat device for her. With your program, I set up automatic answer video call and automatic accept screen sharing. I’ll store the keyboard away and tell her I made a “video telephone” using a mac mini and software.

    Been testing this and it seems there are problems with the mac’s sleep function if one uses auto-away settings. It works after the first instance and it set the computer as away, but if you wake it up, the automatic sleep function (low power state) won’t kick in again.

    I tried downloading both chax 2.1.2 and 2.2b1 and both are causing my iChat to crash when reconnecting or waking up from sleep. I thought this was supposed to be fixed? Anyone have this problem? Any recommendations?

    Hi all. More thanks for author developer of chax.

    Chax is a more powerfull Apple iChat extension. Idea of meta contacts and quickly contact search bar on conctact list is my cool dream. I have a one requist – Adium have “encrypt” mode for chats. Do you create a encrypt tool integration for iChat for Jabber/gTalk and Mobileme/dotmac too?

    The support of encrypted chat over SSL is built into iChat. It is not a part of the Chax.
    It is in iChat Preferences under Accounts – Server Settings, if the server you are connecting to supports it. AOL and MobileMe do.

    I was wondering, could you implement a sort on the Chat window, so that when one has all their tabbed chats running, that they are sorted with similar controls to what is on the Buddy List.

    Sort by Availability, First Name, Last Name, Handle…

    I would love to rearrange the buddylist groups in the unified list. To all of those that have asked for this feature you can open up the window for that list rename the group and add like a numeral or underscore to make it appear first. This is messy but gets the job done.

    Also the beta appears to have deleted my recent buddies in my .mac account

    Hi Kent, it’s been more than two months now since the last update? Are there some unexpected difficulties with the new Chax or is it just the time missing for development?
    Just wondering because there’s no sign of life since then. Hopefully there’s something new soon. I really got used to iChat+Chax over the time. ;)

    I was hoping/wondering if the next version will allow you to turn off unread message counts in iChat. When using growl, it really is unnecessary (at least for me). Mail allows you to turn the dock badges for unread messages off, but not iChat.

    Bug?: When using the All Contacts window (in this case, AIM and Jabber), the Current iTunes Song status cannot be selected. Opening one of the contact lists separately and changing it there works.

    Would it be possible to change to log viewer to use on log for one buddy/friend regardless of how many times they change their names. At the moment, Chax logs the discussions by name rather than email and as a result, causing clutter :(

    A convenient feature would be auto-closing a video chat window after the other person has left the video chat. Another one is remembering the type of chat (audio/video/text) last requested when one chooses the ‘New Chat’ menu item, across application launches. One last extreme request – can one assign a systemwide shortcut for texting or video-chatting a particular contact?

    I love Chax, best plugin ever. I have one quick request.
    I would like a check box in preferences to hide the dock icon. Either permanently or just when iChat is inactive.
    iChat always adds the icon to the dock once a buddy list is opened, but when you first sign in via the menu bar the dock has no trace of iChat.

    Yep, it crashes after closing the chat window if more than one chat session is in the window. This doesn’t happen on the other mac we have. Crashing on a brand new iMac just getting set up.

    I downloaded Chax because my university’s Jabber server is very unreliable and disconnects at least once every hour or two, and Chax is supposed to have an auto-reconnect feature… but I can’t find it! Has this been removed from the current version?

    Chax is having issues with the Safari 4 developer previews. Granted, this is beta, but you might want to nip this in the bud before Safari 4 goes gold. Attached is one of many Crash Reporter logs; iChat randomly crashes once or twice a day.

    Chax and iChat are worth uninstalling Safari 4 if you don’t feel like troubleshooting this issue yet.

    This bug is still present. I hope you fix it soon—it’s the only thing currently standing in the way of me using a Chaxed iChat in place of Adium. Also, how do you enable the multi-touch swiping?

    Just wanted to second this feature request:

    Have the menu bar iChat icon show IM notifcations, like a small “!” ala some Adium iChat themes.
