Chax 1.4.9 Beta 1
This release is almost purely bug fixes, including the recent problem that has cropped up with the Safari 3 beta. Any reports of problems with Safari 3 and this release would be appreciated. One minor new addition is the appearance of key equivalents to switch tabs using the up and down arrows, for those of you who are using vertical tabs.
I’ve also seen an increasing number of people having trouble with Growl and Chax. This version will log any error errors that may occur when attempting to load Growl, but I do not know of any solution to the problem yet.
Changes from 1.4.8:
- (New) Added options for command-up/down arrows to change tabs for vertically oriented tabs
- (Bug) Updated localizations to include new items in the activity window toolbar
- (Bug) Chat logs saved in subfolders of the iChats log folder now appear properly
- (Bug) “Send SMS Message” menu item now respects the the show Chax badge preference
- (Bug) Fixed an issue with new direct IM conversations being immediately selected
- (Bug) Fixed an incompatibility with Safari 3 Beta

Before anyone asks
The delay before text appears on screen is an apple bug, happens even with chax not installed. Not sure if bug is in new webkit, or new webkit just made an ichat bug more apparent. Either way, it’s Apple’s.

Just checking to see if there’s a fix coming for the issue where chax dumps this error in my console multiple times per second anytime ichat is running:
CMSCreateDataProviderOrGetInfo : Invalid colorspace type

Just curious what the the problem was with safari 3.0b that this update addresses?

Hmm. No more “Failed to join chat” error messages, but sending messages in encrypted chats seems to be slightly delayed…

I also notice that sometimes I’m in iChat/Chax with several tabs open, and tabs change by themselves sometimes. I’ll click one tab and then without doing anything, it’ll move up or down one tab. Or I’ll be typing to someone and then the tab changes, then all of a sudden I’m typing to someone else. (Can be dangerous if you don’t look at the screen when typing)

Don’t really see a pattern of when it happens and when it doesn’t…

Growl doesnt work for me. Here’s what I see in the console:
2007-06-15 12:57:35.032 iChat[4167] GrowlApplicationBridge: The Growl delegate did not supply a registration dictionary, and the app bundle at /Applications/iChat.app does not have one. Please tell this application’s developer.

I am having problems with some received IMs not able to chat with. I click the button to accept but when I click it, it doesn’t do anything. I have to close the IM and re IM the person.

CMSCreateDataProviderOrGetInfo : Invalid colorspace type
is caused by aim servers sending a malformed buddy icon image, adium is getting same error messages, yahoo messenger 3.0b1 gets them too when it receives a bad image, it’s actually a webkit error being generated by ichats webkit field (chat window) because of the malformed buddy icon information. it happens even without chax installed.

One mistake in the German localization:
“growl_online” = “%@ came online”; (this is still in English)
should be
“growl_online” = “%@ ist online”;
.

Greg Smith – check for other input managers in both /Library/InputManagers and ~/Library/InputManagers.
You’ll find Chax for sure in one of the locations depending on your install type. For me, I had two other InputManagers that used Growl in there – GrowlPhoto and GrowlCode. BOTH were causing the error for me, same as you. Since Chax is way more important to be I removed the other two and things have been fine since.
I’ve contacted the author of the above two plugins but have had no reply yet.

Had the problem, that a ICQ user couldn’t add me to his contacts, because I had to authorize it and this is not implemented jet. After authorisation with an other ICQ-tool it worked well.
maybe you can fix it…

I just installed Chax for the first time and am loving it! ONE improvement that I would love to see though is the option to put timestamps with each message sent/received.
Is this doable/being considered/in the works?

I am having an issue with Chax auto accepting chat text invites. I always get an error message and have a 2 minute delay to actually getting new chats. As soon as I turn that feature off everything is cool again.

Will you fix the delay in encrypted chats soon?

Growl works fine for me in this beta. Thanks for your work (and I sent a donate-o-gram).
I wonder is it feasible to have a seperate Growl notification option (or sperate notification types) for AIM vs Jabber buddies, so that I can enable one and not the other?
If I turn on available/away growl notifications (primarily for the ability to be alerted when cow-orkers in a remote office come online in AIM) while logged into both AIM and google’s jabber server, I get a flock of spurious notifications every time another gmail user in my buddy list checks their email.

Seems like 10.4.10 put a whammy on Chax. While I’ve heard that others have had other issues that I do not recall, in my experience, the ability to change Buddy List text has gone away after the upgrade…

The delay everyone is complaining about with text displaying is a safari 3.0 webkit bug in 522.11
Didn’t anyone read first post? This bug has since been fixed by safari 3.0.2 so update it and webkit 522.12 will work way better with ichat.

Glad to see an update! However, I’m testing the Leopard beta, and sadly, Chax doesn’t work with iChat 4.0. I really miss the automatically-resizing buddy list.
If you make the source code available, I’ll see if a recompiling it against Leopard’s new frameworks fixes Chax. If not, I’m not much of a programmer, but I’ll gladly work with you to make this ready for Leopard.

I tried your plugin again. But there is one thing which really bugs me. I get sometimes not just one notification but two or four or even more for the same event.
Secondly I have a little feature request, iChat tends to write every debug information in console.log even known one, so it doesn’t support an XEP of Jabber which many clients already do and says it loud and clear in console.log. There must be a way to turn that off.

is it possible to have offline messaging like the new aim has for windows? that would probably make my year, and get me to take out my creditcard…
June 26th, 2007 at 4:21 pm
Hi, I really have been enjoy chax quite a bit! I was wondering if it would be possible to have the status indicator in the menu bar change to a color or a new shape when I have a new instant message?
Usually ichat is in the background and the dock is hidden, however almost always the menu bar is showing, so it would be great to be able tell if I have a new message by looking at that.
Thanks.

Does chax have the ability to suppress the “flotation” of the first message received from a remote party? As it is, I have to either close the windows before I can read their contents, or spend time activating them and parking/minimizing them somewhere. Would love to see a fix that kept these notifications from taking up screen space other than the tally on the dock icon.

Thanks for the update. I had an idea but I don’t know if it’s right for chax. I want use address-book but iChat clogs it up with random buddies with no contact info except there username which makes address-book look ugly. I was wondering if it is possible to create my own database and store the buddy info in it and have an option to sync selected buddies to address-book. I could write it but I don’t know how to make an input-manager.

Feature request … any way you can make the iChat status message show the router (or local ) IP address? As an idiot proof alternative to DynDNS etc. when trying to remote access parent’s and numerous work computers. Many thanks though for CHax as it stands now!
June 30th, 2007 at 6:53 pm
Feature Request — Could you make the buddy list naming user-configurable ? IE, i’d like to enable showing people’s account names, instead of the fname/lname or nickname from address book.
