The problem with all the contacts in the unified list disappearing should be resolved in this update. Updating through Sparkle has also been causing trouble for a number of people; this update should resolve future updates with Sparkle. If you have trouble updating to alpha 7 from an earlier release, manually downloading and reinstalling will resolve any problems.

As a number of you have commented, HTML-stripping for ICQ accounts is still disabled. This was necessary because of the new loading system. I'm still working on figuring out the best way to get that working well, without having to manually relaunch iChatAgent.

  • (Bug) Fixed contacts disappearing from the unified contact list shortly after launch
  • (Bug) Improved the installation and upgrade process. Future updates using Sparkle should be applied more consistently.

Download Chax 3.0 Alpha 7

It works again! Awesome, thanks for the hard work on this - really great app!

Greg Thornton at 2010-01-11 19:26:56 -0500

Installing via Sparkle from alpha 6 definitely wiped out Chax completely. Manual install went smoothly though.

dgk at 2010-01-11 20:29:45 -0500

[Mac OS 10.6.2] Ditto Greg's experience: Took a manual download/install to move from 3.0a6 to a7. (Note: When I ran the manually downloaded installer app and ran it--after having tried the Sparkle approach--the installer asked whether I wanter to reinstall a7, rather than just to install it.) Although nothing cited in the a7 release notes about having fixed it, while--as reported earlier for the a6 release--I had lost the "Add a Buddy" operation via the "+" button in the combined Contacts list under a6, that operation is now working for me in a7. Thanks for the continued work on Chax.

duno what the deal is, but alpha 6 and 7 both kill chax completely for me. Had to revert back to alpha 5. With 6 and 7, it's as if chax didn't exist...

Michael at 2010-01-11 21:39:25 -0500

I also lost chax in the Sparkle update. Manual update worked fine.

Eytan at 2010-01-11 21:56:38 -0500

I had the same experience with the update killing chax and the need to download and install manually. Thank you for the great and continued effort on this. Much appreciated.

Using the "in app" update process killed Chax completely for me as well. Manual download and install (the button actually said "reinstall") worked.

Joseph at 2010-01-12 02:12:39 -0500

I'd just like to report the same issue that everyone else is having. Updating through Sparkle removed Chax. Then manually reinstalling went smoothly. This also occurred during the 3.0a6 update as well. Otherwise, great job Kent!

@Trevor: same for me, 3.0a5 is the last version that works. The last two releases only seem to uninstall Chax from iChat completely. To be honest - I can't find anything wrong with 3.0a5 - it does exactly what I want it to do, i.e. unify the contacts windows - so I've switched off automatic updates in the preferences.

Hi. Thank you for chax. There is still problem with incorrect ICQ formatting. Friend of mine uses Adium and my messages I send him are always wrapped with bunch of html code.

smik at 2010-01-12 05:23:48 -0500

Please fix icq (html) problem.

Andrew at 2010-01-12 06:24:32 -0500

Don't any of you guys even read the blog posting? lolololol @ the ICQ comments

Tim at 2010-01-12 09:39:50 -0500

Thanks for all the hard work! I didn't realize how much I'd come to rely on Chax to make iChat work the way I want. No problems at all with Jabber so far. Feature request: I'd really love to see the autohide windows feature of earlier versions return!

jkdgn1121 at 2010-01-12 09:59:24 -0500

Having same issue as others here. Sparkle install wiped Chax and had to manual install.

myktra at 2010-01-12 11:05:34 -0500

Yes, also reporting that a Sparkle upgrade from a6->a7 failed. Symptom: initially, no contacts in contact list followed by an inability to connect and no Chax features on a subsequent iChat restart. I had to reinstall from the a7 download and it works fine now.

jake at 2010-01-12 12:07:52 -0500

Issue with sparkle update to a6->a7, Chax disappeared. Reinstall from download worked fine.

David Sims at 2010-01-12 12:08:40 -0500

Thank you very much for Chax, Kent. Chax really makes iChat a much better experience for me!

Ron at 2010-01-12 12:19:26 -0500

a7 kills the unified contact list … when iChat launches the contact list does not appear. No idea how to get it back. Ideas?

Matt at 2010-01-12 12:46:38 -0500

Contact list fine, Chax killed by Sparkle Update. Manual reinstall worked fine.

Josh at 2010-01-12 13:59:07 -0500

Also had the same problem going from a5 > a6 and then a6 > a7 using Sparkle. Works fine now I've manually reinstalled.

MHA at 2010-01-12 15:11:01 -0500

Same weird issue here upgrading to a7, but manually downloading and installing, while it looked like it wasn't working, did. Thanks as always for making iChat suck less!

Imaria at 2010-01-12 15:39:05 -0500

Thank you for tolerating everyone who doesn't read your release notes, Kent ;] Keep up the solid work, a beta or stable release looks to be coming soon at this rate!

David Celis at 2010-01-12 17:30:26 -0500

As with a6, installing a7 using Sparkle completely removed Chax. Still a problem here!

David Kaneda at 2010-01-12 17:46:17 -0500

This is my first time using Chax... Is it possible to have an "all contacts" list in the iChat menubar icon?

Mauricio Cordero at 2010-01-12 18:41:15 -0500

Auto-Accept File Transfers is not working here. MacOS 10.6.2 iChat 5.0.1 (743)

REL at 2010-01-13 11:44:53 -0500

yeah, the upgrade still isn't working. it wipes out chax totally. Also, my add button (+) to add buddies, groups , etc, can't be clicked; I've mentioned before. If I close and restart it works once and then its back to being locked again.

Tom at 2010-01-13 13:00:09 -0500

Second Mauricio. Auto-Accept file transfers haven't worked since a5

SteveP at 2010-01-13 13:05:21 -0500

Same issue, both a6 and a7 killed Chax upon autoupdate, had to revert to the manual installer.

Marcello Barnaba at 2010-01-13 13:38:24 -0500

Hi Kent, first off, thanks for all your efforts on Chax. I'd like to collaborate on development: I downloaded /source/Chax_src.zip, but that are the sources of the 2.2 release. What do you think about putting the latest source code on GitHub? If you'd share the source there I'd happily fork and contribute :-) (feel free to check out my profile on http://github.com/vjt ). Of course, other code sharing platforms (e.g. http://bitbucket.org/ ) are great as well. Thanks again for your development time, looking forward to your answer :-). ~Marcello

Toby at 2010-01-13 15:24:28 -0500

2nd: Feature request: I’d really love to see the autohide windows feature of earlier versions return!

Joseph Bayot at 2010-01-13 15:47:36 -0500

Thanks for updating this for Snow Leopard! I love Chax =)

Kevin at 2010-01-13 18:46:51 -0500

Stillnot getting any log activity or Growl. Growl works on other programs so ???? Advice? I unloaded reloaded already.

Felix Weber at 2010-01-14 04:30:02 -0500

same here: only manual updates work, the automatic kills chax completely

Chris at 2010-01-14 07:05:08 -0500

Thanks for Chax and Please Please Please fix the HTML tags...

Steven at 2010-01-14 21:02:37 -0500

Setting the status to current iTunes song doesn't appear to be working. Just me?

rYo at 2010-01-14 22:41:12 -0500

having issues with growl and incoming file transfer accepting...reinstalled multiple times nothing works

Kevin at 2010-01-15 09:18:41 -0500

Anybody got any suggestions on why "Log Activity" or "Growl" is not working? Is anybody else having this same problem?
